Nathan was sick with the suspicion that what had happened in the forest was his fault. That he’d wanted it too much. That Simon had known, had figured it out, and had just…given it to him. That Nathan had manipulated his brother into his own fantasies—had pulled away until Simon had been desperate to be close to him again.

The thoughts, loud and overwhelming most of the time, flickered uncertainly when the vision of Simon’s face over him swam into his mind. His dark eyes, the possessive want in them dripping down, thick as honey and just as sweet.

The way he had said, “That’s it, baby. You’re fucking mine.”

How the fuck was Nathan supposed to fit that into all of this? Into his years-long certainty that he wanted something that would disgust Simon?

How was he supposed to believe that all his desire was reciprocated, just like that?

Nathan made sure to be away from the house for the next couple of days. Took his bike and went to the lake alone, ignoring his sisters’ questioning glances, his parents’ worried ones when he arrived after dinner, skipping every family meal.

He couldn’t look at Simon. Couldn’t face whatever expression was there.

Nathan should have known his mom wouldn’t let him get away with that for long.

He jumped guiltily from where he was bent over the kitchen counter, eating his cold dinner standing, as she cleared her throat behind him.

“Hey, Mom,” he greeted sheepishly.

His mom raised her eyebrows. “Sit at the table to eat at least, Nathan.”

Nathan obeyed, taking his plate to the table and sitting. He wasn’t surprised when his mom joined him, although she didn’t ask anything until he’d finished his food.

It was a good tactic. The calm silence had lulled his heart to stop beating so fast.

“So,” she said finally. “Want to tell me what’s been going on with you?” Her voice was gentle, a tone he’d heard a million times before.

Nathan shrugged, staring at his plate.

“You and Simon have a fight?”

Nathan froze, glancing up at her. “No. Why, has he…said anything?”

His mom laughed softly. “No, you know Simon. He just…it’s obvious when you two aren’t getting along.”

“We’re getting along,” Nathan defended automatically. The words didn’t sound convincing even to himself.

His mom looked at him for a long time. “You know what I’ve been thinking about lately?”

Nathan gave a questioning shrug.

“That time you got sick when you were seven. When you drank that dodgy water and had to go to the hospital…”

“I don’t remember much.”

“No, I know. I bet Simon does, though. He was a wreck. I’d never seen him like that. He always seemed so sure of everything, even at that age. And of course he was scared—you’re his brother, his twin, but…I don’t know. He was so…we had to let him sleep in the hospital with you. He grabbed my hands when we tried to get him to leave and said, ‘If he dies, I die.’ ”

Nathan sat up in his seat, a chill going through him. “I didn’t know that.”

“I
